Why We Eat Sourdough Bread… (and what the heck is that anyway?)

Because it is so good. That is why.

My Wife is an awesome baker. I love eating baked goods. So we are a great match.

What is Sourdough Bread?

Last year, if you had asked me what sourdough bread was, I would have told you that sourdough was another name for soda bread or something. I had no idea what it was. I still don’t really. But this site can tell you a whole lot about it.

Sourdough bread is a bread made from fermented dough. That’s the extent of my knowledge.

Sourdough bread came on our radar as we were learning about the Weston A. Price way of eating. Its a very popular movement that focuses on whole foods but with some interesting takes on what whole foods to focus on (like eat tons of butter…).

There are hundreds of strict diets with all or nothing lists. NO BREAD…. ALL BREAD. NO MEAT… ALL MEAT! ONLY EAT TWO LEGGED ANIMALS…

We are much more about being moderate and balanced with our eating habits.

My wife read up on sourdough, the benefits, and how fermentation reduces the levels of phytic acid. Apparently some claim that phytic acid is not good for us, while others claim we do need some.

Whatever the case, as a woman who runs a moderate menu, based off of eating healthy but not diving into any NEVER THIS/NEVER THAT diets, she decided to try it, for no other reason than to see if we enjoyed it. So she ordered a starter from Cultures For Health and began baking and testing out some recipes.

Oh snap.

It is so good.

So if you’re interested in some great bread recipes that may or may not be way healthy for you (who really ever knows…) here are a few of our favorites.

  • English Muffin Bread (show in pic)
  • Black Canyon Sourdough Bread
  • Sourdough Pancakes

Enjoy.
