The First 10 Tools Every Homesteader Should Have

March 7, 2019 by Aust Leave a Comment

What tools do you need for a homestead?

Today we discuss the first tools you will want to purchase for your homestead and when to buy them.

Over at Our Youtube Channel Evie Tancredo asked:
#askhomesteady can you do a video on setting up a homestead shop/building space from scratch? Like tools and such that you suggest every homesteader have on hand? That would be very helpful.

Sure thing Evie! A new homesteader will have a lot of building projects, repairs, and DIY weekends that will require a good set of tools. Tools can get expensive fast, so I tried to compile a list of the first 10 tools every homesteader should have to help you keep it simple in the beginning…

Tools get expensive fast, so don’t think you need to go out an purchase all these tools day 1. I have them listed in order of when we purchased them, to help you figure out what to buy first and so on…

(NOTE LINKS BELOW ARE AFFILIATE LINKS THAT COST YOU NOTHING EXTRA TO USE)

The workshop space
First for a shop building space you need a clean well lit space, with electric, good ventilation, large doors and easy access to outside. This will help you make sure your building in a safe, streamlined workspace.

If you have a space that is NOT well lit pick up a set of  Halogen lights $40 to brighten things up without having to hire an electrician.

Time to talk tools

Hand tools… we could list hundreds…

Really you need a lot of them, but here are 4 to start your list and let them grow from there…

Hammer – Eastwing 16 Oz Smooth Face $20

Adjustable Wrench – Stanly $8

Socket Set and Driver (pick according to budget)

Quick Grips – set of 6 variety $50

Now my favorite, power tools

These tools are going to help you get things done! They are pricey, so start in order of the list and each year add to your collection…

Sawzall – Dewalt, Chordless battery powered – $127

Drill – Dewalt Impact Driver / Drill Kit $159

Skill Saw – Ryobi Chorded $35

Chopsaw – Dewalt Sliding Compound Miter Saw $350 –

OR – 10 inch portable chopsaw – $200

In addition to tools get yourself a surface to work on.

Using a set of horses combined with some good lumber can make a great table – Dewalt Adjustable $88
