Snow, chicken poop, farm fresh milk and Killing birds. I love homesteading weeks like these.

December 29, 2017 by Aust Leave a Comment

We are moving livestream nights… Stay tuned. There will be no live stream tonight as we are preparing for the launch of our new forum next week.

Snow, chicken poop, farm fresh milk and Killing birds. I love homesteading weeks like these.

It started off cleaning coops with my wife. Now I don’t love cleaning coops, (which I mention in the coop cleaning video) but working alongside my wife is always nice.

Working together on the coops, seeing how many birds we had, and how much feed we were burning through, helped us realize it was time to DOWNSIZE the flock!

And downsize we did!

We sold most of our Muscovy ducks. I have learned over the last year that I am allergic to duck eggs, and so keeping such a large flock of BIG ducks isn’t working with the wallet.

So off the Muscovy ducks went, all except our original pair, Don and Betty Draker.

I know, cheesey duck names. That is part of duck ownership. Don’t believe me?

Listen to our abDUCKted podcast and hear all about how crazy people get when they own ducks…(That is my favorite episode of our podcast BTW)

Crazy duck people also wear duck clothing….  which you can get at our SWAG Shop.

The last bit of downsizing came in the form of butchering. Our one remaining turkey, for the Turkey Catastrophe of earlier this year, was finally processed.

We are busy working on that video for release on Monday, but until then you can see the video all about our DIY Turkey Kill Cone
(FEATURING BIG BIRD)

Finally, we shared a wonderful video featuring our cow and calf, Ladybug and Luna-Moth, and the stanchion setup K uses to milk each morning.

I like weeks like these on the homestead, because they really demonstrate the homestead circle of life.

(I know, lion king had almost as big an influence on me as Jurassic Park)

Some animals come, some go.

Some grow old and are put on the plate.

New ones are born, and bring with them blessings. (LIKE THAT AMAZING MILK!)

All the while My wife and I strive to find the right balance of spending time together on our 10 beautiful acres, working, playing, and eating delicious food. Isn’t that what homesteading is all about?

Happy Farm Friday – Aust

P.S. I almost forgot, we also released a sneak peak video about our upcoming podcast with Accountant Mike…
