When is the Best Time to Plant Apple Trees?

November 5, 2016 by Aust Leave a Comment

You may have heard the saying? The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now.

I’m going to guess that you don’t live where you did 20 years ago… Am I right?

You know what that means? If I’m right, then the second best time (now) just got bumped to first place!

That means you better get cracking, your orchard needs planted ASAP!

Here is the thing….

The best time to plant a tree really is NOW! Like this season. (Fall)

For a few reasons….

  • Trees are dormant in fall, and so they transition better
  • Fall is cooler so there is less danger of trees drying out in the planting process
  • Trees are cheaper to buy in the fall

The last reason is one of my favorites.

A few years back we planted our first apple trees on the property.

I wanted to plant trees that were further along in years so that we would have fruit sooner. These older trees generally go for about $100 a pop in our area! But in November, I walked into the local nursery and found all their trees HALF OFF! I planted 4 trees for the price of 2.

This is really helpful for the homesteader looking to start an orchard from scratch.

You know what else is really helpful for a Homesteader looking to start an orchard from scratch?

Homesteady’s Planting Fruit Masterclass!

This masterclass features Dave Hunt from Northeast Edible.

Northeast Edible is a fantastic nursery located in New Jersey, that specializes in popular and exotic fruit trees and bushes. Dave came up to our Homestead a few months ago and taught us the best way to plant apple trees.

The Planting Fruit Masterclass teaches you everything you will need to know about starting an orchard, including:

  • Choosing the right trees for your Homestead
  • How to prepare for planting day
  • How to plant apple trees that will survive and thrive for years to come
  • What to do with all the apples your going to get
  • Organic maintenance and pest control tips

You can also sign up for the Go Homestead! Course, where we will be sharing excerpts from this masterclass for free very soon!

The trees planted 20 years are great. But the ones you plant now are even more important. They are the ones that will feed our children, and maybe even theirs! So go out, get some half priced trees, and get planting!

Whats your favorite type of fruit tree? Let me know in the comments below!
